Monster Movies

NEW YORK, NY -- On Saturday, a sold-out crowd of 1,400 gathered at Manhattan's Webster Hall to watch wrestlers in monster costumes battle one another in a ring decorated with Styrofoam buildings.

Welcome to the world of Kaiju, where professional wrestling meets Japanese monster movies.

Originally the brainchild of Boston art students, Kaiju is a fictional universe of heroes, villains and gargantuan animated food that provides background for real-life wrestling matches. Kaiju has all the excitement of WWF wrestling, with an ironic twist that makes it palatable to Manhattan hipsters.

Saturday's bout, the Kaiju Big Battel, was the biggest yet, attracting a boisterous crowd of students and culture-nauts.
