NFL to play 2011 Pro Bowl in Hawaii on Sunday before Super Bowl XLV

The Pro Bowl will be back in Hawaii next year, but the NFL announced Tuesday it will play the all-star game before the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year.

"Playing the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl generated more excitement and interest in the event and also kicked off Super Bowl week in an innovative new way," said NFL senior vice president of events Frank Supovitz in a statement released by the league.

"We are pleased to return to the state of Hawaii, which has embraced the Pro Bowl for 30 years."

The Pro Bowl will also be played at Aloha Stadium in 2012, but the game's future after that is unclear.

It was staged at Miami's Sun Life Stadium the Sunday before Super Bowl XLIV, the first time the game had been a precursor to the Super Bowl and the first time since 1979 it had not been played in Hawaii.
